My dear friends;
I write this today as an artist, more so as an aspiring artist who struggles to make his way in order to make a living out of creating images, which happens to be the thing I enjoy the most.
For that I will not talk about the dangers SOPA is promoting in terms of privacy, freedom of speech or about the fact that it will send us back in time at least 30 years in terms of information control and censorship.
I will only talk about the so called Anti-Piracy issue which, for me being an artist is important, but not the way the FBI and the USA think it is.
My first international show ever was a homage to Gremlins, Goonies and Ghostbusters it was a way of exposing my art, my style, my ideas and pay my respects via a reinterpretation, to those characters I love. Today, if SOPA is approved, I would be sued for trying to do that and those three people first interested in my work wouldn't even know about me.
Am I getting my point across?, another example is this one; I went to see The Dresden Dolls live last year. The place was filled to the top and this band was only promoted through the internet and known by the new generations by downloading records and watching videos in youtube. This criminals, this downloaders were paying to see the band perform live because that's what art is about.
The ones fighting this sharing of information are the big corporations, the ones that try to sell us an awful film as an amazing one in 3D, letting out of the picture smaller productions of significantly bigger artistic value.
Internet has done this for us, the artists, it has cut off the middle men. It has united us as a big community, we don't need them any more. Now we have freedom of choice. One can watch a movie in the internet and decide if it's worthy of being part of our DVD collection or not. We evaluate, we appreciate.
Let's suppose I create an image and it gets viral in the web. Immediately, people I don't know nor will I ever know are enjoying and reposting this image. Some of them will find my website, will follow my tweets waiting for me to produce a new image. Let's pretend I start selling prints. I offer them signed and numbered on a small set. People know the "official" prints are on sale at my website and I offer a sketch and a sticker set as well and people buy it. They know when they buy from me, if I'm good enough, I'm allowed to make a living out of my art. I have a good life.
Now let's suppose there's one of them, or several even, that print my work and start selling it cheaper. Oh my god I'm going to die!. No, actually I'm not. The ones that will buy it cheaper would never buy a print, let alone an original from me. Maybe they can't even afford it. The ones that appreciate my work know that I offer good quality, that I'm trying to do a good work and will look for that additional value in my "official" work. If I go to any kind of comic or art convention they will look for me, the artist, not for the products per se.
That's what art is about.
The SOPA pretends to tell us that they care for us, they're looking after us. I don't think they do at all.
I think a kid who takes a Radiohead song and by covering it does a good job and promotes his talent and art, has the right to be free to do so and then start composing and doing his own thing and of course does not deserve to go to jail for this.
This actually makes art honest, you wouldn't support an artist you don't even like just because you're short of choices.
I think we, the artists, need to fight against this. We don't need middle men, we're offering our work to everyone and anyone who wants to take a look and wants to support us.
Sharing is supporting.
Thank you.
